Everything About Using Electrical Power in Other Countries

World Power Outlets, Plugs, & Sockets

Everything You'll Need to Know for Your Travels (and then some!)

Basic Level

Electronic devices nowadays are almost all voltage sensing and switching. Computers, phones, USB chargers, tablets, etc. DO NOT NEED a voltage transformer. You can just plug them in with an adapter that just changes the physical plug and be on your way.

The big exceptions for this are anything that contains a heater: blow dryers, space heaters, heated blankets. Plugging these in can be dangerous and can cause fires. Even using voltage transformers will not always help, as they need to scale with the draw of the device. My recommendation is to bring nothing on your travels that has a heating element. If you need hot tea in your room, or can't sleep without a heated blanket, purchase or borrow those items in the region you will be staying and do not bring your own.

The Third Prong

If the plug for your device only has two prongs, it doesn't need the third grounding prong. For ungrounded devices, these two adapters will get your power everywhere in the world except for the UK, Australia, Argentina, and a few less commonly visited destinations.

US 2-Prong Euro 2-Prong

I don't know if the UK has any 2-prong sockets, but I've never seen one. So you'll need this beast for the UK and a few other countries.

UK 3-prong

Argentina, Australia, and ___ use this plug with angled prongs.

Rug Merchants CONTENT STILL FROM TURKEY PAGE

We were offered help several times in the touristy areas by rug sellers. They were all helpful and friendly. They told us that they were not guides, and not asking for money. They only ask that you visit their rug store after they help you. It was a fun experience and I bought a rug. If you don't want to buy a rug and are susceptible to guilt trips and strong (but friendly) sales pitches, don't let yourself go into the store:) I for one wasn't planning on buying a rug, but am extremely happy with my purchase and the memory it gives me of the trip!
